Valdano hurt in helicopter crash
Former Argentine football great Jorge Valdano was injured when a helicopter carrying him and seven other people crashed in Mexico City, authorities said.
Valdano suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung and will remain in hospital for several days, a source close to the former football star said.
The eight were being treated in a private hospital where officials said one of the crash victims was in serious condition, while the lives of Valdano and the other six were not in danger, officials said.
The chopper crashed just after takeoff from a Mexico City hotel.
A civil aviation official said that "too much weight from passengers and fuel" could have caused the crash.
Born October 4, 1955 in Las Parejas, in Argentina's Santa Fe province, Valdano is considered a key figure in World Football, nicknamed "The Philosopher of Football."
He played for the Argentine team that won the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, was a starter at Spanish giant Real Madrid and later became the Spanish club's sporting director.
He is the author of five books on the sport, including "Suenos de futbol" ("Football Dreams").
