Goal.com has learned from sources on Merseyside that Liverpool have verbally agreed a deal for Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera to move to Anfield when his contract expires at the end of June. Helguera, 30, knows that this is his last chance for one last big pay day with one of Europe’s leading clubs and is determined not to let the opportunity pass him by.
Rafa Benítez is a huge fan of the former Espanyol defender and is attracted by his vast experience at club and international level. The Reds’ boss has Sami Hyypia and Jamie Carragher and sees Helguera as the perfect addition as he continues his rebuilding at Anfield.
With so many Spanish players already at the club, Helguera is well aware that he would quickly settle in England as Fernando Morientes, José Reina, Luis García and Xabi Alonso have revelled in their new surroundings.
Along with the signing of Sergio Ramos and the return of Jonathan Woodgate, Madrid have stalled on new contract talks and that has upset Helguera.
He has also complained of the current squad not being great friends of the pitch, like the players were when he first joined seven years ago.
His move to Anfield now appears to be a matter of time and negotiations can begin in January when he will be legally be allowed to talk to other clubs about a move under the Bosman Ruling.
